BINin

BINin is an open standard and platform designed to facilitate interoperable information exchange across organizational boundaries. It provides data models, secure transmission, and governance practices for multi-domain use. BINin is not a single product but a family of specifications and reference implementations that organizations can adopt.

Development began in the mid-2010s by an international consortium of academia, industry, and government partners. The Core Specification established a flexible data model, a modular protocol, and an accountability framework. Later revisions added privacy features, provenance support, and alignment with ISO, W3C, and IEC standards.

BINin's architecture is modular, comprising a data model, a communication protocol, and governance components. The data model is extensible and schema-driven (JSON-LD compatible) with identifiers, lineage, access controls, and metadata. The protocol layer supports RESTful services and event streams, with cryptographic signing and encryption. Identity uses decentralized identifiers.

Applications include public-sector information exchange, supply-chain visibility, and cross-institutional research data sharing. BINin enables data discovery via shared catalogs while preserving provenance and auditable access histories. Adopters often integrate BINin with data governance tools and compliance frameworks.

Governance is managed by the BINin Consortium, which maintains the Core Specification, runs conformance tests, and coordinates reference implementations. The ecosystem supports open-source contributions. Some observers caution that broad, multi-domain standards risk fragmentation without robust conformance and governance.
