Aðgöngukortum, commonly translated as access cards or entry cards, are physical or digital credentials used to grant or restrict access to a specific area, service, or system. In Iceland, these cards are prevalent in various contexts, ranging from securing buildings and transportation to facilitating online services and managing event attendance.

Physically, access cards often take the form of plastic cards embedded with magnetic stripes, barcodes, RFID chips, or smart card technology. These cards store information that can be read by a corresponding access control reader. For example, employees in offices might use an aðgöngukort to enter their workplace, while residents of apartment buildings might use them to gain entry to common areas. In public transportation, reloadable travel cards function as access cards, allowing passengers to tap in and out of buses or trains.

Digitally, aðgöngukort can manifest as QR codes displayed on a smartphone, unique login credentials for websites, or mobile applications that simulate a physical card. These digital forms are increasingly popular for event ticketing, library access, and digital identification systems, offering convenience and reducing the need for physical items.
