The Azuchi-Momoyama period, named for Azuchi Castle built by Oda Nobunaga near Lake Biwa and for the Momoyama Palace in Fushimi, Kyoto, covers roughly 1568 to 1600, with some sources extending to 1615. It marks the final phase of the Sengoku period and the transition to the Tokugawa shogunate, setting the stage for the early modern era in Japan.
Politically, Nobunaga began campaigns to centralize power, securing Kyoto and pushing into western and central Japan.
