Avretting

Avretting is the process of making a surface even, smooth, or level by removing high points and filling depressions. In Norwegian usage, the term is common in construction, manufacturing, surveying, and landscape work, where a uniform plane or profile is required to avoid tilting, uneven wear, or improper function.

Etymology and usage: The word comes from the Norwegian prefix av- meaning off or away, together with retting, related to straightening or aligning. In practice, avretting describes a range of activities from floor leveling to smoothing a base layer, and it is closely linked to terms such as leveling, smoothing, and flattening.

Applications and contexts: In construction, avretting refers to leveling floors, foundations, and other surfaces to create a flat, true plane. This is often achieved with screeds, straightedges, laser or optical levels, and, increasingly, self-leveling compounds (avrettingsmasse) used to produce a rapid and uniform finish. In road and infrastructure projects, avretting is used to prepare subgrades and surfaces for subsequent layers. In surveying and geodesy, leveling establishes a horizontal reference plane and precise elevations between points. In landscape and agriculture, avretting helps prevent water pooling and erosion by creating gently graded surfaces.

Techniques and materials: Common methods include mechanical screeding, troweling, and the use of self-leveling materials. Quality control relies on measuring flatness and levelness with instruments such as levels and straightedges, and by applying tolerances to ensure the surface meets design specifications.
