Avopalvelut

Avopalvelut, literally “outpatient services” in Finnish, refers to health and social care services provided outside of hospital inpatient care. They are organized to deliver medical treatment, preventive care, rehabilitation, and social support to individuals in a community or outpatient setting. Avopalvelut are typically funded and administered by municipalities or joint municipal authorities and form the backbone of primary and community-based care in Finland.

The scope of avopalvelut covers a broad range of services. In health care, this includes primary health care centers, nurse clinics, general practitioner and specialist outpatient services, diagnostic testing, rehabilitation, mental health outpatient care, and home visits. In social services, avopalvelut encompass child and family welfare, elderly and disability services, social work, and short-term or day services that do not require admission to an inpatient facility. Preventive and public health activities, such as immunizations, health promotion, and disease prevention, are also part of avopalvelut, often delivered through community health centers and outreach programs.
