Avoimuotisia is a Finnish term that translates to "open-form" or "open-molded." It is most commonly used in the context of creating objects or products through a manufacturing process that does not require a closed mold. This is in contrast to methods like injection molding or compression molding, which utilize entirely enclosed molds.

In open-molding processes, the material, often a liquid or semi-liquid resin like fiberglass or carbon fiber reinforced polymer, is applied to a mold surface that is exposed to the atmosphere. The material is then allowed to cure, typically at room temperature or with moderate heat. Common open-molding techniques include hand layup, spray-up, and vacuum infusion. Hand layup involves manually placing layers of reinforcing material and resin onto the mold. Spray-up uses a spray gun to simultaneously apply resin and chopped fibers. Vacuum infusion uses vacuum pressure to draw resin through dry reinforcing fibers in a mold.

The advantages of open-molding include lower tooling costs compared to closed-molding methods, as complex and expensive molds are not necessary. It also allows for the production of very large parts that might be difficult to fit into closed molds. However, open-molding typically results in a less finished surface on the backside of the part, and emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be a concern, requiring appropriate ventilation and safety measures. This method is widely used in industries such as marine, automotive, construction, and for producing custom or large-scale composite parts.
