Avakaevanduses is the Estonian term for open-pit mining, a surface mining method used to extract minerals located near the surface. In open-pit mining a large area of land is excavated, overburden is stripped away, and ore is collected from benches that descend into the deposit. The approach is chosen when ore bodies occur close to the surface or when bulk-tonnage extraction is economically feasible.

Operations typically begin with mine planning and land preparation, followed by stripping of overburden, drilling and blasting to fracture the rock, and loading the ore and waste rock onto haul trucks or conveyors. The ore is transported to processing facilities, while waste rock is deposited in designated dumps or backfilled where feasible. Benches provide stability and access for equipment as pits deepen, and drainage and water management are integral to operation.

Environmental and social considerations are central to open-pit mining. Impacts include land disturbance, habitat loss, dust and noise, water runoff and sedimentation, and potential acid mine drainage. Mitigation measures encompass progressive reclamation, proper waste management, dust suppression, water treatment, and biodiversity protection. Safety concerns focus on slope stability, heavy machinery operations, and blasts, with ongoing monitoring and regulatory compliance.

Advantages and limitations vary by deposit and scale. Open-pit mining can offer high production rates and lower unit costs compared with underground methods, but it entails substantial landscape changes and may be restricted by environmental regulations, depth to ore, and economic feasibility. Advances in equipment, automation, and environmental management continue to shape modern practice.
