Autonavaimet, often translated as "car keys," are essential devices for operating modern automobiles. They have evolved significantly from simple metal keys that mechanically unlocked doors and started the engine. Today, autonavaimet are sophisticated electronic tools that integrate multiple functions.

The primary function of an autonavain remains to grant access to and control the vehicle. This is typically achieved through a transponder chip embedded within the key or fob. This chip communicates wirelessly with a receiver in the car, ensuring only the authorized key can unlock doors, start the engine, or engage the ignition. This security feature helps prevent vehicle theft.

Beyond basic access, many autonavaimet incorporate remote keyless entry (RKE) and remote central locking (RCL) systems. These allow users to lock and unlock their car doors from a distance using buttons on the fob. More advanced autonavaimet may also include functions such as alarm activation and deactivation, trunk release, and even remote engine start.

The design of autonavaimet varies widely. Some are traditional keys with integrated remote controls, while others are keyless fobs that do not require insertion into an ignition cylinder. These keyless systems often rely on proximity sensing, allowing the car to be unlocked and started simply by the driver having the fob on their person.
