AutomotiveBeleuchtung, also known as automotive lighting, refers to the lighting systems installed on motor vehicles for visibility, signaling, and interior illumination. External lighting includes headlights (low and high beams), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, daytime running lights, fog lights, cornering lights, and reflective devices. Interior lighting covers cabin reading lamps and instrument panel illumination. The system also encompasses advanced features such as adaptive front lighting and matrix lighting.

Historically, automotive lighting moved from incandescent lamps to halogen, then to high-intensity discharge (HID) or xenon, and today is largely dominated by light-emitting diode (LED) solutions. Some premium systems employ laser or organic LEDs. Modern headlights often include adaptive or automatic beam control, glare reduction, and automatic brightness adjustments. Daytime running lights have become common to improve daytime visibility and are mandated in many markets.

Regulation and safety: Lighting is governed by national and international standards that specify color, intensity, mounting height, and beam patterns. In Europe, UNECE regulations and ECE R48 cover installation and performance, while the United States uses FMVSS No. 108. Compliance aims to ensure signal visibility, minimize glare for other road users, and support advanced safety systems such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.

Trends: The push for efficiency and safety has accelerated the adoption of LEDs, matrix or pixel LED headlights, and adaptive lighting that responds to speed, steering, and weather conditions. Future developments include tighter integration with driver-assistance systems, enhanced glare control, and continued improvements in nighttime visibility.
