Autoanticorpilor, also known as autoantibodies, are antibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly target and attack the body's own tissues and cells. Normally, the immune system distinguishes between foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses, and the body's own cells. However, in certain conditions, this distinction breaks down, leading to an autoimmune response where the immune system attacks healthy tissues.

Autoantibodies are implicated in a variety of autoimmune diseases, including but not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus), type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Each disease is associated with specific autoantibodies that target particular components of the body, such as joint tissues, skin, insulin-producing cells, or myelin sheaths surrounding nerve fibers.

The exact cause of autoantibody production remains unclear, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. Factors such as infections, hormonal changes, and exposure to certain chemicals or drugs may contribute to the development of autoimmune responses. Additionally, molecular mimicry—a process where foreign antigens resemble self-antigens—can sometimes lead to autoimmune reactions.

Diagnosing the presence of autoantibodies often involves laboratory tests, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) or immunofluorescence assays. These tests detect specific autoantibodies in blood samples, helping clinicians identify potential autoimmune conditions. However, the presence of autoantibodies does not always indicate active disease, as some individuals may produce them without symptoms.

Treatment for autoimmune diseases involving autoantibodies typically focuses on suppressing the overactive immune response. Therapies may include corticosteroids, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologics, or other immunosuppressive agents. The goal is to reduce inflammation, alleviate symptoms, and prevent further tissue damage while minimizing side effects associated with long-term immunosuppression.
