AutoLock

Autolock refers to a mechanism that automatically engages a locking device or restricts access after a trigger, most commonly after a period of inactivity or when a door closes. The term is used across digital and physical security systems.

In digital devices, auto-lock or autolock describes a screen timeout that blanks the display and requires reauthentication to resume use. Configurable intervals vary by platform, from a few seconds to several minutes. When the device locks, the user must provide a PIN, password, pattern, or biometric credential to regain access. In corporate environments, auto-lock policies may be enforced by management software, and additional safeguards such as timed re-authentication and secure enclave storage may apply.

In physical security, autolock refers to a door, gate, or container that automatically secures itself after being closed or after a short delay. Common implementations include electric strikes, magnetic locks, or latch mechanisms synchronized with door position sensors. Autolocking improves access control and safety but can also cause lockouts or entrapment if not properly designed for egress or emergency situations.

Benefits include reduced risk of unauthorized access, protection of data, and energy savings. Potential drawbacks are accidental locking, user inconvenience, and dependence on power or networked control systems in electronic variants. When implementing autolock, administrators and designers consider reliability, failure modes, accessibility, and compatibility with existing security policies.
