Authentifikationsverfahren, also known as authentication methods, are processes used to verify the identity of a user, device, or system. The goal of authentication is to ensure that only authorized entities can access specific resources or perform certain actions. This is a fundamental security measure in computing and information systems.

There are three main categories of authentication factors: something you know, something you have, and something you are. "Something you know" typically involves passwords, PINs, or secret questions. These rely on the user possessing knowledge that is not publicly available. "Something you have" refers to physical items like smart cards, security tokens, or mobile phones that can generate one-time codes. This method verifies possession of a unique item. "Something you are" encompasses biometric authentication, which uses unique biological characteristics such as fingerprints, facial recognition, iris scans, or voice patterns.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) combines two or more of these authentication categories to provide a higher level of security. For example, logging in with a password (something you know) and a one-time code from a mobile app (something you have) is a common form of MFA. Single-factor authentication, using only one of these methods, is generally considered less secure. The choice of authentication method depends on the sensitivity of the data or resource being protected and the desired balance between security and user convenience. Strong authentication is crucial for protecting against unauthorized access and maintaining data integrity.
