Auswärtiges

Auswärtiges is a German term that broadly denotes foreign affairs, but it is most commonly used to refer to the Auswärtiges Amt, the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. The ministry is the executive body responsible for Germany’s foreign policy and diplomacy, coordinating with European and international partners and representing Germany abroad.

The core functions of the Auswärtiges Amt include maintaining and developing diplomatic relations, negotiating international treaties and agreements, and formulating and conveying Germany’s positions on global issues. It provides consular services and protection to German citizens abroad, supports cultural and educational exchange, and contributes to international security, crisis management, and development policy in cooperation with other ministries and international organizations.

Organization and leadership: The Federal Foreign Office is led by the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, who sits in the federal cabinet. A Parliamentary State Secretary typically assists and may oversee parts of the ministry. The civil service comprises career diplomats and staff working across Germany’s embassies, consulates, and missions worldwide, with a network in more than 160 countries.

In the Federal Republic of Germany, the ministry developed in the postwar era and relocated to Berlin after reunification, aligning with the country’s capital and government structures.
