Aussteifen

Aussteifen is a structural engineering term used in German to denote the process of increasing a structure’s stiffness by introducing additional members or reinforcement. The aim is to limit deformations under loads and to improve stability against buckling, shear, and lateral movement.

Applications span buildings, bridges, ships, and other framed structures. In buildings, Aussteifen takes the form of bracing systems such as diagonal or cross-bracing, shear walls, and rigid frame configurations. In timber construction, diagonal elements and frame members are used to resist lateral forces; in steel and concrete construction, braced frames, gusset plates, and shear panels perform the same function.

In earthquake- or wind-prone regions, Aussteifen is a central part of lateral stability design, often requiring computational analysis and standardized detailing.
