Auob

Auob is a seasonal river in southern Africa, running mainly through Namibia with portions extending into Botswana. The name is derived from local Khoisan-language origins and is associated with the arid Kalahari region where the river flows.

Geography and hydrology: The Auob originates in the southern Namibian interior and generally trends southeast across the desert landscape. Like many rivers in this climate, the Auob is largely dry for most of the year, with flows occurring episodically after heavy rainfall. During flood years, the riverbed can carry significant water, shaping the landscape through erosion and sediment deposition and briefly supporting more lush vegetation along its banks.

Ecology: The river corridor supports desert-adapted ecosystems, including riparian vegetation and associated wildlife. In years of higher rainfall, the Auob valley becomes an important area for herbivores and predators moving through the arid environment, and it forms part of broader wildlife networks in the region’s protected landscapes.

Conservation and human use: The catchment includes pastoral lands and small settlements. The river lies within conservation-focused areas in which efforts aim to preserve water resources and maintain suitable habitats for desert wildlife, particularly in and around protected areas such as the adjacent Kalahari landscapes.
