Desertadapted describes organisms that have evolved or exhibit traits enabling survival in hot, arid desert environments. It encompasses both fauna and flora that cope with extreme temperatures, scarce water, and nutrient-poor soils through a combination of physiological, anatomical, and behavioral adaptations.

Adaptations include water conservation, such as efficient kidneys and the ability to endure extended periods without drinking; thermoregulation and heat management through burrowing, shade-seeking behavior, and activity patterns that avoid peak heat (nocturnal or crepuscular rhythms); and morphological traits like light coloration, insulating fur or fat storage, and specialized tissues that minimize water loss. Plant adaptations often involve CAM photosynthesis, succulent tissues for water storage, deciduous leaves during drought, and deep or widespread root systems to capture scarce moisture. Behavioral strategies, including nomadism, caching, and migration to follow resource pulses, also contribute to desert survival.

Examples: Desert-adapted animals include camels (Camelus dromedarius) and fennec fox (Vulpes zerda), as well as oryx, kangaroo rats, and desert elephants in southern Africa. Desert flora includes cacti, agaves, and various xerophytic shrubs.

Ecology and conservation: Desert adaptation reflects convergent evolution across diverse lineages. Desert-adapted species face threats from climate change, habitat loss, and human activity; conservation efforts emphasize protected areas, sustainable water management, and habitat connectivity to support resilient populations.
