Augustiner

Augustiner, commonly known as Augustiner-Bräu, is a historic brewery and beer brand based in Munich, Germany. The name derives from the Augustinian monks who founded the original monastic brewery.

Origins and history: The brewery traces its roots to 1328, when Augustinian monks established a monastery brewery in Munich and produced beer for the community. The operation survived political and economic changes over the centuries and became a private brewery in the 19th century. It is widely regarded as Munich's oldest brewery and remains one of the city’s major beer producers.

Products: Augustiner's beer portfolio centers on Bavarian lagers. The flagship is Augustiner Lager (also known as Helles), a pale, well-balanced beer. The range also includes Augustiner Dunkel, a dark lager; Edelstoff, a pale export beer widely distributed in Germany and abroad; and other seasonal and specialty brews. The beers are produced according to Bavarian brewing traditions and the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot.

Bars and culture: In Munich, the brand operates several beer halls and taverns and is closely tied to local beer gardens, such as the Augustiner-Keller. Augustiner beers are often associated with a smooth, balanced character, and are commonly served in traditional glassware across the city.

Distribution: While the beers are popular in Bavaria and throughout Germany, Augustiner also exports to select international markets, though distribution outside Germany is more limited than some larger breweries.
