Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that overlays digital content—such as graphics, audio, and data—onto the real world in real time, typically viewed through see-through displays or smartphone cameras. Unlike virtual reality, AR preserves the user's perception of the surrounding environment while augmenting it with computer-generated content.

AR has origins in head-mounted display research and marker-based tracking from the late 20th century. Early systems emerged in the 1990s and 2000s, with significant improvements in computer vision, sensor fusion, and mobile processing leading to consumer-grade experiences in the 2010s, notably through platforms like ARKit and ARCore, and the OpenXR standard.

Core technologies include transparent or semitransparent displays (head-mounted displays, smart glasses, or smartphone screens), tracking and localization (marker-based, markerless using simultaneous localization and mapping, optical and inertial sensors), and rendering pipelines that align virtual content with the physical scene in real time.

Applications span entertainment and gaming, industrial maintenance, healthcare, education, architecture and design, and navigation. Prominent examples include location-based games and heads-up navigation, with specialized AR tools used for surgical visualization, remote assistance, and complex assembly.

Benefits include enhanced situational awareness and information access without leaving the real world, while challenges involve latency, limited field of view, lighting conditions, occlusion handling, privacy concerns, content creation costs, and interoperability between devices.

The AR ecosystem continues to evolve with improved wearables, more robust computer vision algorithms, cloud and edge processing, and greater standardization across platforms to enable cross-device experiences and scalable enterprise deployments.
