Augenform

Augenform is a descriptive term used to characterize the shape of the eye as it appears on the face. In anatomy, ophthalmology, and aesthetics it refers to the overall geometry formed by the visible part of the eye, the eyelids, and surrounding structures. The perceived Augenform results from the orbital shape and the eyelid configuration, including the palpebral fissure, the canthi, and the eyelid crease.

Common categories used to describe Augenform include almond-shaped, round, hooded, and monolid, as well as upturned or downturned eye corners. The almond shape is often cited as a standard reference, but natural variation is wide, and eyelid anatomy (double vs single eyelids) can substantially modify appearance without changing the eye itself.

In practice, Augenform affects cosmetic and functional considerations: eyeglass frame selection, contact lens fitting, makeup techniques, and, in some cases, planning for blepharoplasty or other procedures. Clinically, the shape can be described qualitatively or measured with metrics such as palpebral fissure length and canthal tilt.

There is significant natural variation across individuals and populations, influenced by genetics, aging, and health conditions. While it is a descriptive feature, Augenform is not an indicator of vision or health on its own; rather it contributes to facial aesthetics and individual identity.
