Aufwickler

Aufwickler, commonly translated as rewinder, is a machine used in converting and manufacturing to wind a continuously supplied material onto a core to form a roll. The term is used across industries such as textile, paper, film, foil, plastics, and cable production. It operates downstream of processes that produce or unwind a web or filament, and can be integrated into an inline line or function as a standalone unit. It is distinct from an Abwickler, the unwinding device.

Principle of operation: The material is drawn from a supply roll and guided to a take-up spindle. The take-up roll is driven by a motor, while the supply and wind tensions are controlled to produce even layers. Tension control is achieved through brakes, dancers, sensors or closed-loop controllers to accommodate changes in web width, thickness or winding radius. The winding direction and offset can be adjusted to produce uniform layers and prevent telescoping or uneven density. Some systems include cross-winding or multiple cores to improve winding quality and throughput. Modern machines often use servo or servo-twinned drives and automated roll changing.

Variants and features: Aufwickler come in several configurations, including center-wind and surface-wind designs, and may be designed for narrow webs or wide laminates. They can operate as standalone units or as part of a complete converting line. Common features include core handling systems, spindle or turret-type changers, programmable winding parameters, and integration with upstream unwinding or downstream inspection, slitting or laminating equipment.

Applications: Typical applications include winding of textile yarns and filaments, paper and board, plastic films and laminates, foils, coatings, cables, and optical fibers, where controlled tension and uniform roll formation are essential.
