Audiologic

Audiologic is an adjective relating to audiology, the branch of science and healthcare focused on hearing and balance. In common use, it describes activities, assessments, devices, and therapies that pertain to the identification, evaluation, and management of hearing loss and vestibular disorders.

Clinical audiology encompasses diagnostic testing and rehabilitation. Diagnostic testing includes methods such as pure-tone and speech audiometry, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, and electrophysiological measures like auditory brainstem responses. Rehabilitation covers fitting and fine-tuning hearing aids and cochlear implants, device verification, and counseling on communication strategies. Audiologic care also includes tinnitus management, aural rehabilitation for children and adults, and balance assessment through vestibular testing when indicated.

Professionals in audiology are trained clinicians known as audiologists, typically holding a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree or equivalent, and they may be credentialed by national or regional regulatory bodies. Practice settings include hospitals, clinics, schools, research laboratories, and private practice. Regulations often require licensure or certification to diagnose hearing or balance disorders and to dispense devices; continuing education is commonly required.

Historically, audiology emerged in the mid-20th century as a distinct discipline driven by advances in hearing technology and the need to support individuals with hearing impairment. Today, audiologic services integrate multidisciplinary care, technology development, and patient-centered rehabilitation.
