Atomenergiförvaltningens

Atomenergiförvaltningen, often abbreviated as AE, was a Swedish government agency responsible for nuclear energy matters. It was established in 1970 to oversee the development, regulation, and safety of nuclear power in Sweden. The agency played a crucial role in implementing Sweden's nuclear policy, which at the time was focused on expanding nuclear energy as a source of electricity. AE was involved in licensing nuclear power plants, supervising their operation, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. It also conducted research related to nuclear technology and waste management.

As Sweden's nuclear debate evolved, so did the role of Atomenergiförvaltningen. Following a referendum in 1980 that decided to phase out nuclear power, the agency's mandate shifted. While still responsible for safety and regulation during the operational phase of existing plants, its focus increasingly turned towards the decommissioning of these facilities and the long-term management of radioactive waste. AE also played a part in international cooperation on nuclear safety and non-proliferation.

In 1986, following the Chernobyl disaster, safety regulations were tightened, and AE's oversight became even more stringent. The agency continued its work through the 1990s and early 2000s, managing the complex process of Sweden's nuclear phase-out. In 2008, Atomenergiförvaltningen was dissolved, and its responsibilities were transferred to other Swedish authorities, primarily the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten) for safety and regulatory aspects, and the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB) for waste management.
