Kärnbränslehantering refers to the processes involved in managing nuclear fuel throughout its lifecycle. This encompasses the handling of fresh nuclear fuel, the management of spent nuclear fuel, and the eventual disposal of radioactive waste. Fresh fuel is typically manufactured into fuel assemblies for use in nuclear reactors. Once a fuel assembly has been used in a reactor, it becomes spent nuclear fuel, which is highly radioactive and generates significant heat.

Initially, spent nuclear fuel is stored in cooling pools at the reactor site. These pools allow the fuel to cool down and reduce its radioactivity over time. After a period of cooling, some spent fuel may be transferred to dry storage facilities, which are typically robust concrete or steel casks. This storage is considered interim, as it is not a permanent solution.

The long-term management of spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive waste is a significant challenge. Strategies include reprocessing of spent fuel to recover usable uranium and plutonium, although this is not practiced in all countries. Ultimately, the goal is to isolate radioactive materials from the biosphere for the extended periods required for their radioactivity to decay to safe levels. Sweden, for example, has been developing a deep geological repository for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
