In the imagined scenario, atollit would be a carbonate silicate phase emerging from diagenetic reactions between reefal carbonates and siliceous groundwater under near-surface conditions. The name is derived from atoll, reflecting its supposed origin in reef-built islands, with the -ite suffix common to mineral nomenclature.

Described properties vary between accounts; fictional descriptions commonly assign atollit a light color, translucence, and a pearly to vitreous luster, with a Mohs hardness around 3-4 and a relatively low to moderate density.
