Atelomycterus

Atelomycterus is a genus of small, slender catsharks belonging to the family Atelmyteridae. These sharks are found in the Indo-West Pacific region, inhabiting shallow coral reefs and sandy bottoms. They are typically small in size, with adults rarely exceeding 60 centimeters in length. Atelomycterus sharks are nocturnal predators, feeding on small invertebrates such as crustaceans and mollusks.

Species within the Atelomycterus genus are characterized by their distinctive color patterns, which often include saddle-like markings or spots. They possess elongated bodies, rounded snouts, and large eyes adapted for low-light conditions. Their fins are relatively small and rounded, and they have two dorsal fins, the first being significantly larger than the second. Atelomycterus sharks are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. The egg cases are typically oblong with tendrils that help anchor them to seaweed or coral.

The genus Atelomycterus currently includes several recognized species, though taxonomic classifications can be subject to revision as new research emerges. These sharks are not considered a significant threat to humans and are of little commercial importance. Due to their reef-associated habitat, they can be vulnerable to habitat degradation and overfishing in certain areas.
