Astypalaia

Astypalaia is a Greek island located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, belonging to the Dodecanese island group. It is situated between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, giving it a unique cultural and architectural character. The island's shape is often described as resembling a butterfly or a heart.

The capital and main port of Astypalaia is Chora, which is perched on a steep hill and crowned by a Venetian castle. The castle offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands. The town itself is a maze of whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and windmills, reminiscent of the Cycladic islands. Below Chora lies Pera Gialos, the main harbor, with tavernas and small shops.

Historically, Astypalaia has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was colonized by the Dorians in the 11th century BC. Throughout its history, it was ruled by various powers, including the Athenians, Romans, Byzantines, Knights of Saint John, Venetians, and Ottomans. The Venetian castle, built in the 13th century by the Querini family, is a prominent reminder of this period. The island was united with Greece in 1948.

The economy of Astypalaia relies mainly on tourism and fishing. The island offers beautiful beaches, clear waters, and a tranquil atmosphere, attracting visitors seeking a more authentic Greek island experience away from the crowds. Local specialties include honey, cheese, and fresh seafood.
