Asteroccephalidae
Asteroccephalidae is a family of extinct cephalopods that lived during the Devonian period. These ancient marine creatures are known for their distinctive, star-shaped or astericonic shell morphology. The family is characterized by a loosely coiled shell where the whorls are not in tight contact, creating a more open and often spiny appearance. This unique shell structure is believed to have been an adaptation to their environment, possibly aiding in buoyancy or defense against predators.
Fossils of Asteroccephalidae are found in marine sedimentary rocks dating back to the Middle and Late Devonian.
