Assumestäyttämisvastuu, often translated as "vicarious liability" or "respondeat superior," is a legal doctrine that holds one party responsible for the wrongful actions of another, even if the first party was not directly involved in the wrongdoing. This principle is commonly applied in employer-employee relationships, where an employer can be held liable for the torts or negligence of their employees committed within the scope of their employment. The rationale behind this doctrine is that the employer benefits from the employee's work and is therefore in a better position to bear the costs of any harm caused by the employee's actions.

The application of assumestäyttämisvastuu requires that a specific relationship exists between the liable party and the wrongdoer, and that the wrongful act occurred within the scope of that relationship. For instance, if an employee causes an accident while on company business, the employer may be held liable.
