AssociationInternational (AI) is a global umbrella organization that coordinates and represents national and regional associations across civil society, professional fields, and industry sectors. It positions itself as a platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the development of common standards to improve governance, transparency, and impact.

Founded in 2003 by delegates from ten national and regional associations spanning five continents, AI established a secretariat in Geneva and began offering programs for capacity building and cross-border cooperation. The federation has since grown to include hundreds of member organizations and affiliate networks.

AI is governed by a General Assembly comprising member associations, an elected Board of Directors, and a Secretariat led by a Secretary-General. It maintains sectoral and regional committees to address governance, ethics, program quality, and member services. Decision-making is by voting in the General Assembly, with observers from partner organizations.

Core activities include an annual conference, regional meetings, guidance and research on governance best practices, and a certification program for ethical standards in association management. It also publishes reports on civil society trends, facilitates exchange opportunities for staff and volunteers, and coordinates joint initiatives across borders.

Membership is open to national and regional associations that meet criteria on independence and governance. AI also collaborates with international organizations, academic institutions, and civil society networks to advance policy dialogue and shared projects.

AI funds its work through member dues, project grants, and philanthropic contributions. It maintains a stated commitment to transparency, publishes annual financial statements, and undergoes independent audits. Critics note that the size and dues structure can pose barriers for smaller associations, and governance arrangements have been scrutinized for inclusivity across regions.
