Asphaltfräsungen, also known as cold milling or pavement profiling, is a common construction and maintenance technique used on asphalt pavements. It involves the mechanical removal of the top layers of asphalt concrete. This process is typically carried out using specialized machinery called asphalt milling machines, which are equipped with rotating drums fitted with cutting teeth. These teeth chip away at the asphalt surface, creating a consistent and uniform depth of removal.

The primary purposes of asphalt milling are varied. It is often employed to repair damaged or worn-out asphalt surfaces, such as those with rutting, cracking, or unevenness. By removing the deteriorated layer, a fresh surface is exposed, allowing for the application of new asphalt or other overlay materials. Milling is also used to prepare the pavement for resurfacing, ensuring proper adhesion of the new layer and preventing an undesirable increase in the road's height. In some instances, milling is utilized to remove old road markings or to achieve a specific surface profile for drainage purposes. The material removed, known as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), is often recycled and incorporated into new asphalt mixes, contributing to sustainable construction practices. The depth of milling can be precisely controlled, allowing for selective removal of only the damaged sections or the entire existing asphalt layer.
