Aspergerin

Aspergerin is a term that has been used informally and in some older literature to refer to individuals who might now be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Historically, Asperger syndrome was a distinct diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), characterized by difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. However, it was not associated with significant delays in language development or cognitive abilities, which distinguished it from other forms of autism.

In 2013, the DSM-5 integrated Asperger syndrome into the broader category of Autism Spectrum Disorder. This change aimed to recognize the spectrum of symptoms and varying levels of support needs within the autism community. Individuals previously diagnosed with Asperger syndrome are now typically diagnosed with ASD, often with a specifier indicating the level of support required. The term "Aspergerin" itself is not a formal diagnostic term and is rarely used in current clinical or scientific contexts. It is best understood as a historical descriptor for a profile of autistic traits that is now encompassed within the modern understanding of ASD.
