Asellus

Asellus is a genus of freshwater crustaceans belonging to the order Isopoda. These small, segmented invertebrates are commonly known as freshwater hoglice or water hoglice. They are found in a wide variety of aquatic habitats across the globe, including ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams, often preferring areas with submerged vegetation.

Asellus species are typically detritivores, meaning they feed on decaying organic matter such as dead leaves, algae, and other decomposing plant material. This ecological role makes them important in nutrient cycling within aquatic ecosystems. They play a role in breaking down organic debris, making it available for other organisms.

The body of an Asellus is flattened dorsoventrally and segmented, with seven pairs of legs. They possess two pairs of antennae. Their reproductive strategy involves internal fertilization, and females carry their eggs in a brood pouch. The young, when they hatch, resemble miniature adults and are capable of independent life.

While generally harmless, the presence and abundance of Asellus can sometimes be used as an indicator of water quality. Certain species may be more tolerant of pollution than others, so their population dynamics can offer clues about the health of an aquatic environment. They are a common food source for various aquatic predators, including fish and some invertebrates.
