Arundel

Arundel is a historic market town and civil parish in the Arun district of West Sussex, England. The town sits on the River Arun, about 50 miles southwest of London and 11 miles northeast of Chichester, near the South Downs. It has a compact historic core that centers around the riverfront.

The town is famed for Arundel Castle, a dominant medieval fortress that began in the 11th century and remains the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk. The castle and its gardens are major visitor attractions. The town is also home to Arundel Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, and a notable example of Victorian-era ecclesiastical architecture.

Arundel retains a well-preserved medieval core, with timber-framed houses along the High Street and a riverside precinct with shops, galleries, and the Arundel Museum, which documents local history and the castle's role in the region. The surrounding area includes the River Arun and the South Downs, offering walking and outdoor recreation.

In addition to tourism, Arundel has a small local economy centered on retail and services. The town is connected by rail via Arundel railway station on the Arun Valley line, and by road from the nearby A27 and surrounding routes.

The town has a traditional market-town character and hosts annual events such as the Arundel Festival, which features arts, music, and theatre. The Duke of Norfolk and the Fitzalan-Howard family have long been associated with Arundel through the castle.
