Brighton

Brighton is a seaside city on the south coast of England, in the ceremonial county of East Sussex. It forms the unitary authority of the City of Brighton and Hove, which also includes the adjacent town of Hove. Located on the English Channel, the city lies about 50 miles south of central London and is known for its vibrant cultural scene, historic architecture, and coastal character.

Historically, Brighton began as a fishing village and grew into a fashionable resort in the 18th and 19th centuries, helped by royal patronage and sea air. The Prince Regent, later King George IV, commissioned the Royal Pavilion, a distinctive Indo-Saracenic palace that remains a landmark. Regency-era terraces and the historic fishing quarter gave the town its architectural identity, alongside the two piers: the Palace Pier and the now largely derelict West Pier. The seafront and surrounding streets developed into a diversified urban center, with redevelopment continuing into the modern era.

Brighton offers a wide range of cultural and recreational attractions. The Royal Pavilion, The Lanes, and Kemp Town are notable historic and shopping districts, while the Brighton Dome complex hosts music, theatre, and arts events. The seafront is complemented by contemporary venues such as the Brighton i360 observation tower. The city hosts major festivals, including a prominent arts festival and Pride events. Higher education institutions in or near the city include the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex in Falmer, contributing to a diverse, student-influenced population.

The economy is driven by tourism, education, and creative industries, including digital and media sectors. Brighton is served by Brighton railway station with connections to London, Gatwick Airport, and the broader network; the A23 and nearby road routes link it to the national road system. The city is also home to football club Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.
