Articulationbearing is a term used in mechanical engineering to describe a bearing arrangement that supports an articulated connection between two components while allowing movement at the joint. It is designed to permit rotational and angular motion while carrying radial and axial loads, and it often accommodates some misalignment between connected parts.

Construction and materials typically involve inner and outer races or housings with a rolling element set (such as balls or rollers) or a spherical bearing arrangement that can accommodate angular misalignment. Articulationbearings may be implemented as spherical plain bearings, ball joints, rod-end bearings, or integrated rotary joints. Materials commonly include alloy steels, stainless steels, and, in high-speed or corrosive environments, composites or ceramics. Lubrication is a key consideration and may be provided by grease, oil, or sealed lubrication systems to reduce wear and minimize maintenance needs.

Types of articulationbearings emphasize the kind of movement they support. Spherical bearings tolerate multidirectional angular movement; rod-end or ball joints provide pivoting action at a specific axis; and specialized devices may combine features for complex joint articulation in robotics or machinery.

Applications span robotics and automation, automotive suspension and steering, industrial machinery, and aerospace linkages, wherever a joint must transmit load while allowing controlled articulation. Advantages include the ability to accommodate misalignment, smoother motion, and extended service life under complex loads.
