Armânesh

Armânesh is a term used to refer to the Aromanians, an ethnic group native to the Balkan Peninsula. The Aromanians are a Romance-speaking people whose origins are debated among scholars, but are generally considered to be descendants of Roman colonists and Romanized indigenous populations. They are found in scattered communities across Greece, Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro. Historically, they were a nomadic or semi-nomadic people, often engaged in sheep herding.

The Aromanian language, also known as Macedo-Romanian, is an Eastern Romance language. It shares similarities with Romanian but has distinct features due to historical isolation and influences from neighboring languages. Aromanian dialects vary geographically, and there is no universally standardized written form, though efforts have been made to establish one.

Aromanian culture is characterized by strong communal ties, traditional music, and distinct customs. Their historical transhumance lifestyle has shaped their social structures and traditions. In modern times, many Aromanians have assimilated to varying degrees into the cultures of the countries they reside in, and their language and cultural identity face challenges in preservation. Despite this, there are ongoing efforts by Aromanian communities and organizations to maintain and promote their heritage.
