Aritmetilooginen

Aritmetilooginen refers to the arithmetic logic unit, or ALU. The ALU is a fundamental digital circuit that performs arithmetic and bitwise logical operations on integer binary numbers. It is a core component of a computer's central processing unit (CPU), alongside the control unit. The ALU's primary function is to execute calculations and logical decisions, forming the basis of all computational tasks.

These operations are crucial for the execution of machine code instructions. The ALU receives data from registers or memory and performs the specified operation, then outputs the result back to a register or memory. It also generates status flags, such as zero, carry, or overflow, which are used by the control unit to make decisions about program flow.

In essence, the ALU is the "brain" within the CPU responsible for the actual computation. Without the ALU, a computer would not be able to perform any calculations or logical comparisons, making it impossible to run software or process data.
