Aritmeetilised

Aritmeetilised is an adjectival term used in Estonian mathematical vocabulary to describe anything pertaining to arithmetic, the branch of mathematics concerned with numbers and the basic operations performed on them. In general use, aritmeetilised elements include numbers, the four fundamental operations, and the rules that govern their manipulation.

Common areas labeled aritmeetilised include arithmetic properties such as commutativity (a + b = b + a), associativity ((a + b) + c = a + (b + c)), and the distributivity of multiplication over addition (a · (b + c) = a · b + a · c). It also covers numerical representations (integers, fractions, decimals) and techniques for mental calculation, estimation, rounding, and written algorithms.

Applications span primary education, basic science and engineering, and computer science, where arithmetic forms the foundation of more complex mathematics and algorithms. In computing, aritmeetilised operations are implemented at the processor level and influence numerical precision and performance; in number theory, arithmetical methods underpin modular arithmetic and primality tests.

Origin of the term traces to the Greek arithmētikē, meaning the science of numbers, through Latin and modern European languages. In Estonian usage, aritmeetilised is often used to describe properties, methods, or tasks that deal with numerical calculation and number manipulation.
