Arengukohts

Arengukohts refer to a specific type of historic environment located in Estonia. These areas are designated as development regions to support local economic growth. The primary goal of establishing arengukohts is to enhance regional development, improve the living standards of local residents, and facilitate the balanced growth of the Estonian economy.

The concept of arengukohts was introduced as part of the European Union's regional development policies in Estonia. These areas are chosen based on their economic and social conditions, with the intention of revitalizing local communities and utilizing available resources effectively. Arengukohts represent areas of Estonia that are lagging behind the national average in terms of economic development and have been historically disadvantaged.

Estonian authorities have established various development priorities for arengukohts, focusing on creating jobs, improving the quality of life, and promoting sustainable growth. Initiatives such as job creation programs, education and training schemes, and infrastructure development are implemented in these regions. The development of tourism, in particular, has become a key driver for stimulating the economy in arengukohts.

To date, there are five official arengukohts in Estonia: North-West Estonia, South Estonia, east and south of Estonia include Hiiu, Läänemaa and Pärnu maa, bordered it in the south or East and, Soth in the east region. By fostering growth in these areas, the Estonian government aims to create a more cohesive and equitable society, ensuring that the economic benefits of development are enjoyed by all regions.
