Archívnictvo

Archívnictvo is the theory and practice of managing archives. It encompasses the principles and methods used for acquiring, appraising, preserving, organizing, describing, and providing access to historical records and other materials of enduring value. The primary goal of archival science is to ensure the long-term preservation of authentic and reliable records that document the activities of individuals, organizations, and governments.

Archivists employ various techniques to achieve these goals. Appraisal involves determining which records have sufficient historical, administrative, legal, or evidential significance to be retained permanently. Preservation focuses on protecting records from deterioration and damage through appropriate storage conditions, conservation treatments, and disaster preparedness. Organization and description are crucial for making archives accessible. This involves arranging records in a logical order, typically based on their provenance (origin), and creating finding aids, such as inventories and catalogs, that describe their content and context.

The field of archívnictvo is interdisciplinary, drawing upon knowledge from history, library science, information science, and law. Modern archival practice is increasingly influenced by digital technologies, leading to the development of new strategies for managing electronic records and ensuring their long-term accessibility in the digital environment.
