ArchitekturFrameworks, commonly referred to as architecture frameworks, are structured sets of concepts, models, and guidelines that support the development, documentation, and governance of architecture within a domain. Frameworks provide a common vocabulary, a reference structure for architectural artifacts, and a repeatable process to align stakeholders and manage change over time.

Several families of architecture frameworks exist across domains. Enterprise architecture frameworks focus on aligning business and IT strategy and include TOGAF, Zachman, FEAF, DoDAF, and MODAF. Software architecture frameworks provide methods and views for describing software systems, exemplified by the 4+1 view model, Arc42, and reference architectures and patterns such as MVC and microservice architectures. Building and urban planning frameworks address physical structures and cities and apply similar concepts for standards, governance, and lifecycle management.

Common components include reference models, a set of viewpoints or views, an architecture description language or template, governance roles, and a library of reusable artifacts. Implementing a framework typically involves defining scope, creating architecture descriptions, conducting formal reviews, and governing changes over time.

Benefits of using a framework include improved consistency, traceability, and reuse; better alignment between strategy and implementation; and more effective risk management. Criticisms include potential overhead, rigidity if applied dogmatically, and the need for skilled practitioners to realize value.

Selecting a framework depends on goals, regulatory context, and organizational maturity; many organizations adopt hybrid approaches that mix elements from several frameworks to fit their needs.
