**Arbetsdjur** (Swedish for "work animals") refers to domesticated animals historically used for labor, transportation, and agricultural tasks in Sweden and other Nordic countries. These animals played a crucial role in rural economies, particularly before the widespread adoption of mechanized farming. Common types of arbetsdjur included horses, oxen, cows, donkeys, and mules, each suited to different purposes.

Horses were frequently used for plowing fields, pulling carts, and even as mounts for riders, especially in early farming societies. Oxen, particularly the Swedish cattle breeds like the Swedish Black-Faced, were essential for heavy plowing and draft work due to their strength and endurance. Cows were also employed for milk production and as draft animals, though they were less common than oxen in agricultural labor.

Donkeys and mules were sometimes used in regions where horses were scarce or for tasks requiring extra strength, such as hauling heavy loads over rough terrain. In some cases, these animals were also used for riding or as pack animals for transporting goods.

The use of arbetsdjur declined significantly in the 20th century with the rise of tractors, combines, and other mechanized equipment. However, some traditional farming practices and rural communities still rely on these animals for cultural preservation and sustainable agriculture.
