Arbeitschutzgesetz, abbreviated ArbSchG, is the central German federal act governing occupational safety and health in workplaces. It applies to most employers and employees across sectors and sets the general framework for preventing work-related risks and protecting workers.

The law imposes general duties on employers to ensure safe and healthy working conditions. Core obligations include carrying out a systematic risk assessment, eliminating or reducing hazards, and implementing appropriate protective measures. Employers must organize safety management, provide information and instruction to employees, ensure suitable training, and arrange for necessary supervision and preventive services. The frame also requires arrangements for emergency situations and for the coexistence of work processes and safety requirements.

Key roles and bodies include the involvement of safety professionals such as occupational physicians and safety engineers, who may be provided by the employer or external services. Employers may appoint safety representatives and must cooperate with works councils regarding safety issues where available. Employees have the duty to follow instructions, use protective equipment, and report hazards or incidents promptly.

Enforcement and consequences: the law is enforced by competent authorities and the statutory accident insurance institutions. Violations can lead to administrative penalties, orders to suspend activities, or other remedies. Accidents and occupational incidents are to be reported to the appropriate accident insurance body, which also conducts inspections and provides guidance.

The ArbSchG interacts with sector-specific rules and regulations, such as the Workplace Ordinance and the Hazardous Substances Regulation, and aligns with European Union directives on occupational safety and health.
