Arbeidssdesign, often translated as "work design" or "job design," refers to the intentional structuring of tasks, duties, and responsibilities within a job. It is a systematic approach to defining the content and methods of jobs, aiming to improve both individual performance and employee satisfaction. This involves considering various aspects of a role, such as the variety of skills required, the degree of autonomy granted to the employee, the significance of the tasks, the identity of the work (meaning completing a whole piece of work), and the feedback provided on performance.

The principles of arbeidssdesign are rooted in understanding human needs in the workplace. A well-designed job can lead to increased motivation, higher productivity, reduced errors, and lower employee turnover. Conversely, poorly designed jobs can result in boredom, stress, dissatisfaction, and burnout. Various models and theories inform arbeidssdesign, including job characteristics theory, which suggests that five core job dimensions are key to fostering intrinsic motivation.

Practical implementation of arbeidssdesign can involve job rotation, where employees move between different tasks, job enlargement, which adds more tasks at the same level of difficulty, and job enrichment, which involves adding more responsibility and autonomy to a role. The goal is to create jobs that are not only efficient for the organization but also engaging and meaningful for the individual performing them. This requires a balance between organizational goals and employee well-being.
