Apokalyptism

Apokalyptism refers to a belief system centered around the idea of an impending, catastrophic end of the world. This concept is found in various religions, mythologies, and philosophies throughout history. The term itself derives from the Greek word "apokalypsis," meaning "unveiling" or "revelation," suggesting that the end times are revealed through divine or prophetic means.

Central to apokalyptism is the belief in a dramatic transformation of the existing world order. This often involves a cosmic struggle between good and evil, leading to a final judgment. The outcome of this struggle typically results in either the complete destruction of the current world and the creation of a new, perfect one, or a significant, albeit less total, restructuring. Apokalyptic narratives frequently feature symbolic language, prophecies, and visions that describe the events leading up to and including the end times. These prophecies may include signs in the heavens, the rise of specific figures, or widespread societal upheaval. The motivations behind apokalyptic beliefs can vary, including a desire for divine justice, a yearning for a radical societal change, or a way to interpret and cope with periods of intense suffering or crisis. While often associated with religious contexts, elements of apokalyptic thinking can also be found in secular ideologies that anticipate a radical societal collapse or revolution.
