Antioksidansvern

Antioksidansvern, or antioxidant defense, refers to the biological systems within living organisms that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can harm cells, DNA, and other cellular components through a process called oxidation. This damage is linked to aging and various diseases.

The body's antioxidant defense system is multifaceted. It includes both endogenous antioxidants, produced within the body, and exogenous antioxidants, obtained from the diet. Endogenous antioxidants include enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, which directly neutralize free radicals. Other endogenous compounds, such as glutathione and uric acid, also play a role.

Exogenous antioxidants are commonly found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Vitamins like Vitamin C and Vitamin E, as well as minerals such as selenium and zinc, are well-known dietary antioxidants. Phytochemicals, like flavonoids and carotenoids, also contribute to the body's antioxidant capacity.

When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body's antioxidant defense mechanisms, a state of oxidative stress occurs. Oxidative stress is implicated in the development of numerous chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and certain cancers. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and a healthy lifestyle can help support the body's natural defense against free radical damage.
