AntiTPOvastaaineet, also known as anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies, are autoantibodies directed against thyroid peroxidase (TPO). TPO is an enzyme crucial for the synthesis of thyroid hormones within the thyroid gland. The presence of these antibodies in the blood indicates an autoimmune process affecting the thyroid.

Elevated levels of anti-TPO antibodies are commonly found in individuals with autoimmune thyroid diseases, particularly Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is the most frequent cause of hypothyroidism in iodine-sufficient areas. They are also frequently observed in Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder leading to hyperthyroidism. While strongly associated with these conditions, anti-TPO antibodies can sometimes be present in individuals with normal thyroid function, a state known as euthyroid autoimmunity.

The detection of anti-TPO antibodies is a key diagnostic tool in endocrinology. Their measurement aids in confirming the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease, distinguishing it from other causes of thyroid dysfunction. In some cases, these antibodies can be detected years before clinical symptoms of thyroid disease become apparent, suggesting their potential role as early markers of thyroid autoimmunity. The titre of anti-TPO antibodies can fluctuate over time and does not always correlate directly with the severity of thyroid dysfunction. Management of thyroid conditions primarily focuses on thyroid hormone replacement or suppression, rather than directly targeting the antibodies themselves.
