Anställdes

Anställdes is a Swedish finite verb form used to express the past passive voice of the verb anställa, which means to employ. The form indicates that someone was employed by an employer in the past and is commonly found in formal writing, such as news reports or HR documentation.

The form should not be confused with related but distinct words. Anställda (with a and e at the end) is the plural noun meaning employees, or it can be used as an adjective meaning employed. Anställd (without -es) is the past participle or the adjective meaning employed, and it can function as a noun referring to a person who is employed. Anställdes, in contrast, is strictly a past passive verb form.

Morphology and usage: anställa is a regular verb in its active forms (pres. anställer, past active anställde, etc.). The present passive is anställs, and the past passive is anställdes. The past passive is used when the subject receives the action of employing, often with a phrase indicating the agent, for example with av + agent: Han anställdes av företaget. The agentive phrase can be omitted if understood from context.

Examples:

- Han anställdes av företaget i januari. (He was employed by the company in January.)

- Flera personer anställdes efter rekryteringen. (Several people were employed after the recruitment.)

- Hon anställdes som projektledare. (She was employed as a project manager.)

In modern everyday Swedish, the passive voice is frequently formed with blev anställd or anställs, but anställdes remains correct in formal or historical texts.
