Ansprand

Ansprand was a Lombard duke of Asti and regent of the Kingdom of the Lombards. He played a significant role during a period of political turmoil in the early 8th century.

Born into a noble family, Ansprand rose to prominence through his military and administrative capabilities. He became the Duke of Asti, a strategically important region in northern Italy. His influence grew, and he eventually found himself in a position to act as regent.

The circumstances leading to Ansprand's regency were complex, involving the succession of the Lombard throne. King Liutprand, the most famous Lombard ruler, was a significant figure during this era. After the death of King Perctarit, and during the minority of his son, the young king, Ansprand, along with another nobleman named Ragimpert, was appointed to govern the kingdom.

Ansprand's regency was marked by internal strife. Ragimpert, however, soon sought to usurp the throne for himself. This led to a conflict between the two regents. Ansprand, despite his initial partnership, found himself in opposition to Ragimpert's ambition.

Ultimately, Ansprand was able to prevail in this power struggle. He defeated Ragimpert and secured his own position, effectively ruling the Lombard kingdom for a period. His regency, though relatively short-lived, was a critical phase that maintained stability for the Lombards before the ascension of King Liutprand, who would go on to become a highly influential monarch and significantly expand the Lombard kingdom's territory and power. Ansprand's legacy is that of a capable leader who navigated a challenging political landscape.
