Anogenital

Anogenital refers to the region encompassing both the anal and genital areas of the body, comprising structures that are anatomically adjacent and functionally interrelated. In humans, the anogenital zone includes the perineum, external genitalia (penis, scrotum, vulva, and clitoris), the anus, and surrounding skin and musculature. Developmentally, these structures arise from the cloacal membrane during embryogenesis; the cloaca divides into the urogenital sinus and the anorectal canal under the influence of the urorectal septum, leading to the formation of separate urinary, genital, and digestive openings.

The anogenital area contains a dense network of nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatics, contributing to its sensitivity and role in excretory, reproductive, and sexual functions. Hormonal influences, particularly androgens and estrogens, shape secondary sexual characteristics and maintain tissue health throughout life. The region is also a common site for medical conditions such as infections (e.g., human papillomavirus, herpes simplex), inflammatory diseases (e.g., anal fissures, vulvovaginitis), neoplasms (e.g., anal and genital cancers), and congenital anomalies (e.g., hypospadias, imperforate anus).

Clinical assessment of the anogenital area involves visual inspection, palpation, and, when indicated, imaging or histopathological evaluation. Preventive measures include vaccination against oncogenic viruses, safe sexual practices, and regular screening for malignancies.
